Let us introduce you to the Allagash Wilderness Waterway Foundation (AWWF). Now in our eighth year, we have made steady progress in fulfilling our mission to support preservation, protection, and enhancement of the Waterway’s unique wilderness character and experience. The support and guidance of passionate users––paddlers, fishermen, hunters, and winter sports enthusiasts alike––have been the most important ingredients in our success. We invite you to consider adding your name to our list of ‘Friends’.
AWWF was established in October 2011, and since then we have worked closely with Waterway staff and others in the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands (BPL) to enhance one of the jewels in Maine’s crown of public parks. AWWF funded the first baseline survey of the Waterway’s campsites in 2013. That survey set in motion a 10-year plan of campground improvements. In that same year, we funded a pilot youth program that has become our most successful community effort. Youth on the Allagash now supports trips of middle school and 9th grade students every year from several gateway communities in the St. John River Valley and south down the Rt. 11 corridor. In 2015 AWWF funded the state’s acquisition of the Lock Dam Lot, the only remaining privately-owned parcel within the Waterway.
In 2018 we completed Storied Lands & Waters, https://digitalmaine.com/books/112/, an historic and cultural resource assessment of the Waterway. This year we are preparing the Allagash Explorer, a pocket guide to help interpret that history and we will launch a natural resource assessment in collaboration with the BPL and others, which will become a companion to Storied Lands & Waters.
